With summer holidays nearly over and both of them wanting somewhere different to go, Matt and Stew set off in search of a far off pagoda that they have heard about. After their long walk they are a little disappointed with the strange building perched on top of a hill, but they soon find a door and go in. Somehow, after leaving the pagoda they find themselves in a different time and place.
Lost and confused they get help from a magpie who only makes matters worse. Then they end up being snatched and held prisoners in a deep dark crypt. This is only the beginning of their troubles. Luckily they escape but while trying to find their way back to the pagoda they run into Strom. At first he appears to be a friend, but appearances can be deceptive, for he has a sinister plan.
Once again the boys find themselves held captive, and once again they manage to escape. Now they are on the run, being hunted down by dogs, with their every move being spied upon by magpies.
At last, with the help of some new true friends, Matt and Stew eventually find their way back to the pagoda, but can they reach it in time and find safety before Strom destroys them.
